Tonight’s meeting was well attended, as an impromptu and popular topic had been decided upon the previous week: Belgian beer. Unfortunately Phil couldn’t make the meeting to tell of his recent visit to Belgium. Hopefully we’ll get a nice presentation, or at least some good stories, at the August meeting.
Members brought many commercial Belgian beers, as well as their own Belgian homebrews, like Ken’s coriander-rich Belgian (not sure the style). There was quite a variety on hand, including one commercial beer brewed using gruit (an old-fashioned herb mixture used for flavoring and bittering) instead of hops. Scott (of Captain Lawrence) brought out some of his St. Vincents Dubbel, a Belgian-style abbey ale.
There was a very pleasant vibe at the meeting, with lots of lively discussion. Was it due to enthusiasm for brewing, or the Belgian influence…
Check the forum for a great list of Belgian beers, posted by Brett Danahy.
